Frequently asked questions

What is a UUID?

A universally unique identifier: a 128-bit value written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups, like 3f2b8c1e-9a4d-4f6e-b1c2-7d8e9f0a1b2c. Version 4 UUIDs are random, so two systems can create IDs independently without colliding.

Can two UUIDs ever be the same?

In theory, but version 4 has 122 random bits. You would need to generate billions per second for many years before a duplicate became likely.
